Hamels rebounds after two bad starts, throws CG Shutout!

Some Headlines:

Cole Hamels threw a CG 3 hit shutout. It is his second CG shutout this season.

Griffey
comes less than a foot short of his 600th HR in the ninth inning, but
Victorino makes a great over the shoulder catch to send Griffey out of
Philly stuck on 599.

Some Stats:

Hamels (W 6-4): 9 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 4 K

Bailey (L 0-1): 6.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 2 ER, K

Howard: 1-4, RBI

Jenkins: 1-4, HR (6), RBI

The Game:

Two
words can describe this game. They are Cole, and errors.  Cole Hamels
threw 9 innings of 3 hit shutout ball meanwhile three errors on the
Reds led to three unearned runs by the Phils. Quite simply the game
only took 2 hours and 6 minutes, so not much fireworks except for
Jenkin’s solo shot.  It was a great confidence booster for Hamels who
had two straight bad starts, and the Phils gave the Reds a dose of
their own medicine shutting them out the night after Volquez did.

What does this win mean?

The
Phillies have finished this 10 game homestand with an 8-2 record,
including a 3 game sweep of the Rockies, a 2-1 series victory over the
Marlins, and a 3-1 series win over the Reds.  They now are 2 games
ahead of the Marlins.

Moyer (6-3) vs. Hudson (7-4)

Doh! Myers loses no-no in 7th w/ 2 outs, game 2-0.

Some Headlines:

Myers loses no-hitter in 7th inning with 2 outs, and also loses shut-out in same at-bat..

Volquez ties the record for most consectutive starts to open a season with an ERA under 2. (12 starts)

Some Stats:

Volquez (W 8-2): 7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 8 K

Myers(L 2-8): 7.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 8 K, 6 BB

Cordero:(S 12): 1 IP, 1 BB

Votto: 2-3, 2 RBI, 1 BB

The Game:

Wow,
this game was a no hitter for both pitchers for 5 innings. Then in the
sixth, Volquez’s no-no was broken by Ryan Howard, and for the next
three innings the Phillies would get runners on second by walking or
stealing, but couldn’t get a hit. Meanwhile Myers had a no-hitter until
the 7th with 2 outs. 0-2 pitch to Joey Votto, with Phillips on second
who walked then stole a base, was hit by Votto for a double. No hitter,
and the shutout gone in one swing…and the swing didn’t even have
leave the park. Wow. And then more Phillies frustration as they
couldn’t score. It was a pitching duel, that Volquez won. And with it,
Myers regains some confidence, but the Phils couldnt back him up.

What does this loss mean?

The
Phillies now will have to win today to insure a series win. They are
now 7-2 on this homestand. Also coupled with the Marlins win yesterday,
the Phillies now are only 1.5 games ahead of the Fish.

Hamels (5-4) vs. Homer Bailey (0-0)

Phillies beat Reds by one run again, this time 3-2!

Some Headlines:

Utley doesn’t hit a HR, but goes 2-3 w/ an RBI.

Victorino goes 0-3, ending his hit streak at 14 games.

Some Stats:

Eaton (W 2-3): 6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 5 K

Harang(L 2-8): 6 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 4 K

Lidge: (S 15): 1 IP, 1 H, 2 BB

Utley: 2-3, RBI, R

Burrell: 1-4, 2-R HR (14), R

Rollins: 3-4, 2 SB, R

The Game:

The
Reds opened up the scoring in this game when Encarnacion hit a solo
shot off Eaton in the third. It would be the only run the Reds scored
off Eaton all night. Meanwhile Utley figured that if tonight wasn’t his
night to hit a HR, he might as well help out with Rollins on 2nd. Utley
had an RBI single in the bottom of the third to get the run back, and
until the sixth, the score remained a 1-1 pitcher’s battle. That was
until the sixth, with Utley hitting a double to the gap to get on, and
Burrell hitting a 2-run HR to put the Phils ahead 3-1. Eaton came out
in the seventh, got a great double play, and left the game as J.C
Romero came out to face the left-handed hitter Adam Dunn. Eaton, the
target of plenty of boos lately, left to a standing ovation after his
second straight 6+ inning 1 run outing. Meanwhile Harang was chased out
later after the Phillies put base runners on 2nd & 3rd with no one
out. Herrera, a prospect brought up from Triple A Louisville, came on
and got out of a bases loaded 1 out jam by striking out Howard and
Burrell to end the jam. Then in the eighth Gordon allowed a leadoff
triple to who else but Encarnacion, and Valentin came in as a pinch
hitter and scored him on a sac fly. Ken Griffey Jr. came up to bat but
was walked on 4 pitches. Onto the ninth, where Brad Lidge couldn’t find
the strike zone, and walked one, before getting a huge DP by Feliz to
get two quick outs, only to allow to walk Dunn on a 3-2 fastball low.
After a hit by Votto, the Reds on runners on 1st & 2nd with 2 outs,
only to watch Encarnacion fly out to right to end the game.

What does this win mean?

The
Phils take the game 2 of this 4 game series, which insures at least a
series split. They are now 7-1 on this homestand. Also coupled with the
Marlins loss yesterday, the Phillies now are 2.5 games ahead of the
Fish.

Myers (3-6) vs. Volquez (7-2)

Oh Happy Day! Phils take Game 1 from Reds 5-4!

Some Headlines:
Utley hits his MLB leading 21st HR.
Jay Bruce hits his 3rd HR since coming up.

Griffey sits out, still at 599 HR.

Some Stats:

 Kendrick (W 5-2): 5.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER

Arroyo (L 4-5): 4.1 IP, 10 H, 5 ER, 4 K

Lidge: (S 14):  1 IP, 2 K
Utley: 3-4, 2-R HR (21), 2 RBI, R

Feliz: 1-3, 2-R HR (8), 2 RBI, BB, R

Bruce: 2-4, HR (3), RBI,2 R

The Game:

The Phillies opened up the game with two runs after Utley hit his 21st
HR in the bottom of the first, scoring Shane Victorino, and spotting
Kendrick and the Phils a 2-0 lead. They continued to hit in the bottom
of the third, but Utley was out at the plate on a single from Howard to
end the inning. The next inning Jay Bruce came out and hit his third HR
since coming up. The Phillies answered quickly in the bottom of the 4th
however with 3 runs, coming off back to back HR’s by Feliz (who scored
in Burrell), and Coste’s single shot to left center. Kyle Kendrick
could not hold though, and over the next two innings gave up 3 runs on
Encarnacion’s solo shot, and a 2 run double off the bat of Adam Dunn.
The score after 6 innings was 5-4. It would stay that way, as Durbin
got out of the sixth for Kendrick, pitched a scoreless 7th, followed by
1-2-3 innings by Gordon and Lidge, who got his 14th save in as many
oppurtunities.

What does this win mean?

The Phils take the opener of this 4 game series, their last one on this
homestand. They are now 6-1 on this homestand. Also coupled with the
Marlins loss yesterday, the Phillies now are 1.5 games ahead of the
