D’oh! Phillies beat 6-2 on Uggla’s Walkoff GS HR!

Some Headlines:

Cole Hamels has a career high 13 K.

Uggla hits walkoff GS HR.

Some Stats:

Gregg (W 5-2): 1 IP, H, ER, K, 2 BB

Gordon (L 5-3): .1 IP, 2 H, 4 ER, 4 BB

Cantu: 3-4, 2 HR (14), 2 RBI

Utley:  1-4, 2 RBI

The Game:,

Wow, just wow. Two words. Home Run. Again. Cole Hamels made two bad pitches all game. They both were HR balls to the same guy. Jorge Cantu. That gave him 3 HR in two games in this series. But even with that, Utley bailed out Hamels with 2 clutch RBIs one coming in the top of the ninth to tie the game. Then came Gordon in the ninth. Now obviously this is the move to make right? You certainly don’t want Lidge to pitch because it’s not a save situation. And Gordon has been lights out since his opening day debacle. So off we go. Ramirez gets on, followed by the rest of the order. One out. Bases loaded. Uggla up at the plate. 3-1 count. A walk ends the game. A groundball double play sends the game into extra innings. That was the thought going through my head…and then…it happened.  Gordon tried to get him to bite over the plate. Uggla bit all right. All the way to the eighth row out in left. Just like that a game in which Hamels and Miller fought valiantly, Utley and Cantu accounted for all offense, and the pitching was key, Uggla with one swing doubled the bullpen’s ERA. The final…Marlins 6-2.

What does this loss mean?

The
Phillies have lost this series, but can get back one of these games today if they can pull out a win and they can keep their division lead at 3 games with a win. The Phillies are now 3-2 on this 9 game
road trip.

Moyer (6-3) vs. Olsen (4-2)

D’oh! Phillies let opener w/ Marlins slip away 5-4!

Some Stats:

Nolasco (W 6-4): 6 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 3 K, BB

Myers (L 3-8): 5.1 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 5 K, BB

Gregg (S 12): 1.1 IP, H, K

Ramirez: 2-3, HR (15), RBI

Cantu: 2-4, HR (12), 2 RBI

Rollins:  1-4, HR (5), 2 RBI

Burrell: 2-4, HR (16), RBI

The Game:,

 This
game started off eerily similar to the game between these two division
foes at Citizen’s Bank Park not to long ago. Brett Myers allowed 3 runs
in the first, against these same Marlins and Ricky Nolasco.  The
difference here? The Phillies couldn’t win the game like they did that
day.  Although Myers settled down, as soon as Rollins got the Phillies
within 1 with his 2 run HR to make it 3-2, next inning, Myers allowed a
2 run HR by Jacobs to nullify that. A couple of valiant 2 out RBIs by
Dobbs and Burrell could  not surmount the tough pitching of the Marlins
top heavy bullpen, and even Victorino who had a monster series in
Atlanta, was robbed twice of extra base hits on great catches by
Jacobs. Twice. The final was the Marlins 5-4.

What does this loss mean?

The
Phillies have started this pivotal 3 game series with a loss at the
hands of their division rival, who because of this loss are now only 3
games back in the division. The Phillies are now 3-1 on this 9 game
road trip.

Oh Happy Day! Phillies win game 6-3, sweep Braves!

Some Headlines:

The Braves suffered their first sweep at Turner Field.

Ryan Howard has 3 RBI Doubles.

Some Stats:

Durbin (W 2-1): 2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 K

Boyer (L 1-4): .1 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, BB

Lidge (S 17): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER

Howard: 3-5, 3 2B, 4 RBI

Victorino: 3-5, 3 R, RBI

Teixeira: 3-5, 2-R HR (7), 2 RBI

The Game:,

 The
scene for this game was set in the 1st inning, when the Phillies took a
quick 2-0 lead of off the first of Ryan Howard’s 3 RBI Doubles and a
groundout RBI by Jenkins, only to have Mark Teixeira tie the game in
the bottom of the frame with a 2 R HR to deep CF. Both starters, Eaton
and Campillo, only allowed one more run to score before they both
exited later on.  All knotted up in the ninth we go, where Victorino
hits the go ahead RBI, only to have Howard hit the last of his 3 RBI
Doubles to break the game wide open, and Lidge held on for the save,
with the final score: 6-3.

What does this win mean?

The
Phillies have started this pivotal 9 game road trip with a sweep at one
of the toughest places to play in baseball (Turner Field). They are now
3-0 on this road trip, and have increased their lead in the division to
3.5 games over the Marlins, and 6.5 over the 3rd place Braves.

Myers (3-7) vs. Nolasco (5-4)

Hamels rebounds after two bad starts, throws CG Shutout!

Some Headlines:

Cole Hamels threw a CG 3 hit shutout. It is his second CG shutout this season.

Griffey
comes less than a foot short of his 600th HR in the ninth inning, but
Victorino makes a great over the shoulder catch to send Griffey out of
Philly stuck on 599.

Some Stats:

Hamels (W 6-4): 9 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 4 K

Bailey (L 0-1): 6.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 2 ER, K

Howard: 1-4, RBI

Jenkins: 1-4, HR (6), RBI

The Game:

Two
words can describe this game. They are Cole, and errors.  Cole Hamels
threw 9 innings of 3 hit shutout ball meanwhile three errors on the
Reds led to three unearned runs by the Phils. Quite simply the game
only took 2 hours and 6 minutes, so not much fireworks except for
Jenkin’s solo shot.  It was a great confidence booster for Hamels who
had two straight bad starts, and the Phils gave the Reds a dose of
their own medicine shutting them out the night after Volquez did.

What does this win mean?

The
Phillies have finished this 10 game homestand with an 8-2 record,
including a 3 game sweep of the Rockies, a 2-1 series victory over the
Marlins, and a 3-1 series win over the Reds.  They now are 2 games
ahead of the Marlins.

Moyer (6-3) vs. Hudson (7-4)

Doh! Myers loses no-no in 7th w/ 2 outs, game 2-0.

Some Headlines:

Myers loses no-hitter in 7th inning with 2 outs, and also loses shut-out in same at-bat..

Volquez ties the record for most consectutive starts to open a season with an ERA under 2. (12 starts)

Some Stats:

Volquez (W 8-2): 7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 8 K

Myers(L 2-8): 7.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 8 K, 6 BB

Cordero:(S 12): 1 IP, 1 BB

Votto: 2-3, 2 RBI, 1 BB

The Game:

Wow,
this game was a no hitter for both pitchers for 5 innings. Then in the
sixth, Volquez’s no-no was broken by Ryan Howard, and for the next
three innings the Phillies would get runners on second by walking or
stealing, but couldn’t get a hit. Meanwhile Myers had a no-hitter until
the 7th with 2 outs. 0-2 pitch to Joey Votto, with Phillips on second
who walked then stole a base, was hit by Votto for a double. No hitter,
and the shutout gone in one swing…and the swing didn’t even have
leave the park. Wow. And then more Phillies frustration as they
couldn’t score. It was a pitching duel, that Volquez won. And with it,
Myers regains some confidence, but the Phils couldnt back him up.

What does this loss mean?

The
Phillies now will have to win today to insure a series win. They are
now 7-2 on this homestand. Also coupled with the Marlins win yesterday,
the Phillies now are only 1.5 games ahead of the Fish.

Hamels (5-4) vs. Homer Bailey (0-0)

Phillies beat Reds by one run again, this time 3-2!

Some Headlines:

Utley doesn’t hit a HR, but goes 2-3 w/ an RBI.

Victorino goes 0-3, ending his hit streak at 14 games.

Some Stats:

Eaton (W 2-3): 6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 5 K

Harang(L 2-8): 6 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 4 K

Lidge: (S 15): 1 IP, 1 H, 2 BB

Utley: 2-3, RBI, R

Burrell: 1-4, 2-R HR (14), R

Rollins: 3-4, 2 SB, R

The Game:

The
Reds opened up the scoring in this game when Encarnacion hit a solo
shot off Eaton in the third. It would be the only run the Reds scored
off Eaton all night. Meanwhile Utley figured that if tonight wasn’t his
night to hit a HR, he might as well help out with Rollins on 2nd. Utley
had an RBI single in the bottom of the third to get the run back, and
until the sixth, the score remained a 1-1 pitcher’s battle. That was
until the sixth, with Utley hitting a double to the gap to get on, and
Burrell hitting a 2-run HR to put the Phils ahead 3-1. Eaton came out
in the seventh, got a great double play, and left the game as J.C
Romero came out to face the left-handed hitter Adam Dunn. Eaton, the
target of plenty of boos lately, left to a standing ovation after his
second straight 6+ inning 1 run outing. Meanwhile Harang was chased out
later after the Phillies put base runners on 2nd & 3rd with no one
out. Herrera, a prospect brought up from Triple A Louisville, came on
and got out of a bases loaded 1 out jam by striking out Howard and
Burrell to end the jam. Then in the eighth Gordon allowed a leadoff
triple to who else but Encarnacion, and Valentin came in as a pinch
hitter and scored him on a sac fly. Ken Griffey Jr. came up to bat but
was walked on 4 pitches. Onto the ninth, where Brad Lidge couldn’t find
the strike zone, and walked one, before getting a huge DP by Feliz to
get two quick outs, only to allow to walk Dunn on a 3-2 fastball low.
After a hit by Votto, the Reds on runners on 1st & 2nd with 2 outs,
only to watch Encarnacion fly out to right to end the game.

What does this win mean?

The
Phils take the game 2 of this 4 game series, which insures at least a
series split. They are now 7-1 on this homestand. Also coupled with the
Marlins loss yesterday, the Phillies now are 2.5 games ahead of the
Fish.

Oh Happy Day! Phils take Game 1 from Reds 5-4!

Some Headlines:
Utley hits his MLB leading 21st HR.
Jay Bruce hits his 3rd HR since coming up.

Griffey sits out, still at 599 HR.

Some Stats:

 Kendrick (W 5-2): 5.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER

Arroyo (L 4-5): 4.1 IP, 10 H, 5 ER, 4 K

Lidge: (S 14):  1 IP, 2 K
Utley: 3-4, 2-R HR (21), 2 RBI, R

Feliz: 1-3, 2-R HR (8), 2 RBI, BB, R

Bruce: 2-4, HR (3), RBI,2 R

The Game:

The Phillies opened up the game with two runs after Utley hit his 21st
HR in the bottom of the first, scoring Shane Victorino, and spotting
Kendrick and the Phils a 2-0 lead. They continued to hit in the bottom
of the third, but Utley was out at the plate on a single from Howard to
end the inning. The next inning Jay Bruce came out and hit his third HR
since coming up. The Phillies answered quickly in the bottom of the 4th
however with 3 runs, coming off back to back HR’s by Feliz (who scored
in Burrell), and Coste’s single shot to left center. Kyle Kendrick
could not hold though, and over the next two innings gave up 3 runs on
Encarnacion’s solo shot, and a 2 run double off the bat of Adam Dunn.
The score after 6 innings was 5-4. It would stay that way, as Durbin
got out of the sixth for Kendrick, pitched a scoreless 7th, followed by
1-2-3 innings by Gordon and Lidge, who got his 14th save in as many
oppurtunities.

What does this win mean?

The Phils take the opener of this 4 game series, their last one on this
homestand. They are now 6-1 on this homestand. Also coupled with the
Marlins loss yesterday, the Phillies now are 1.5 games ahead of the
Fish.

Oh Happy Day! Phillies Win 7-5 over the Marlins!

Phillies Phaithful and MLB fans,

First off, I’d like to say that as a first time blogger on this
site, I’d like you all to know that I love this. Writing about the
Phils and MLB to an audience that cares…that is great! So to the
game…

Some Headlines:

Lieberthal retires a Phillie.
Utley hits his MLB leading 20th HR.
Jamie Moyer improves to 8-0 lifetime against the Fish.

Some Stats:

Moyer (W 6-3): 7 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 3 K, 0 BB
Waechter (L 0-1): 1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, BB
Lidge: (S 13):  1 IP, 2 K
Utley: 1-2, HR (20), RBI, 2 BB, SB
Burrell: 1-2, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB
Jenkins: 1-2, 2-R HR (5), 2 RBI
Jacobs: 2-4, 2 HR (13), 4 RBI

The Game:

The Phillies opened up the game with a run after Utley stole second,
and Howard singled him in with 2 outs. In the next inning, Jacobs led
off with the the first of his two homeruns for the Marlins, and by the
time the top of the third inning was over the Marlins put 5 unanswered
runs thanks in part to another Jacobs HR.  However in the bottom of the
inning the Phillies got a couple back when Rollins took advantage of an
error to score from third, and Utley who has homered in all 3 games of
this series hit his MLB leading 20th HR to get the Phillies within two
runs.  Meanwhile Moyer settled down and had a stretch where he retired
7 straight to keep the Phils in the game, until the 6th, when Waecther
came into the game, and there was all this talk about how crazy he was
against right handed hitters. With So Taguchi coming up, and a man on,
Charlie Manuel made one of those decisions to insert Jenkins. The guy
hasn’t had a pinch hit all season! What was he thinking putting Jenkins
(a righty) against this guy!? Better Jenkins than Taguchi I guess…and
then…Geoff Jenkins Two Run Homerun to Right Field!!!!! Can you
believe this game is tied up at 5?!!!!! Well it was one of those
choices where if Jenkins struck out Manuel looks dumb, and if he hits a
homerun…he looks… like a genius.  And so onto the 7th where with 2
outs, Burrell (who had a two out RBI yesterday) came up to the plate
with Victorino on second, Howard (who was hit by a pitch) on first, and
looked back as the first pitch bounced off Rabelo’s glove to the wall,
a wild pitch which advanced the runners to second and third. And then
after a couple of pitches, Burrell hits one down the line in left, and
if you were watching he thought it was foul so he was running half
heartedly with the bat still in his hand halfway down the line before
realizing “Oh crap it fell in…” Burrell slid safely into second, and
watched as he put across what would be the two game winning runs for
the Phils.

What does this win mean?

The Phils take 2 out of 3 from the Marlins for their 5th win in 6 games
on this homestand so far, and wrestle first place from the Marlins for
the second time in three days. It also means the Phillies have insured
a .500 homestand, and set the tone for the remaining 15 games against
this tough division foe.

Looking ahead:

Phillies vs. Cinncinatti
Citizens Bank Park
Monday June 2nd @ 7:05
Kyle Kendrick (4-2) vs. Bronson Arroyo (3-4)
*Let’s hope Griffey doesn’t hit 600 in Philly…
